Alyn Smith, SNP Member of the European Parliament has today welcomed an announcement from Tennent’s brewery that they will place calorie labelling on tins of their beer. Alyn has been calling for nutritional labelling to be placed on alcoholic beverages since 2009.
This comes on the back of sustained pressure from the public and politicians alike.
“I have been calling for compulsory calorie labelling since 2009 and I welcome Tennent’s decision.
“Ultimately, people have a right to information so they can make informed choices. If the makers of Irn Bru who are ten miles up the road are obliged to tell consumers what they are drinking I see no reason why Tennent’s shouldn’t!
“Voluntary action like this is all well and good but we need regulations that bring alcohol into line with the rest of the industry. As such I have raised this issue with EU Commissioner for Health Vytenis Andriukaitis in the hope we can make progress.
“Tennent’s move is clearly welcome but it is simply a case of catching up."
