SNP MEP Alyn Smith today addressed a policy conference on the risks and rewards from emerging renewable technologies.
The conference, part of EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), focuses on the ocean energy case. Scotland's advances in renewable energy and the potential that our oceans have to help meet our energy targets were highlighted. Alyn emphasised Scotland's role in harnessing this potential when he spoke alongside the European Commission and the Irish Energy Minister as Ireland currently hold the EU Presidency.
Speaking after the conference, Alyn said:
"Scotland is renowned for advances in renewable energy and is home to the most exciting emerging energy technologies. Scotland is leading the way on ocean energy in particular and I'm delighted that this is being recognised.
"Scotland is the ideal location for ocean energy. It's no coincidence that Scotland is home to the world's best testing facility for wave and tidal energy prototypes allowing us to have more devices being developed and tested than anywhere else in the world. It makes sense for Scotland to be at the heart of ocean energy development and I will be doing all I can to help the sector reach that crucial market-ready stage.
"Scotland really is at the heart of 21st century energy technologies and I'm proud to see our success showcased in Brussels today."
