European Support For Borders Redesignation

26 April 2010
Alyn Smith, SNP MEP for Scotland, has pledged his support for calls to realign boundaries in the South of Scotland in order to see the region continue to benefit from EU money and has written to the European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, underlining the importance of the proposed change.

A review of the boundaries which are used as a basis by the EU to determine whether a region is eligible for financial aid through the Structural Funds programme is currently underway.

Mr Smith said:

“Just last week we saw the South of Scotland being awarded over £4 million of European funding which will be a real, concrete benefit to the area, creating hundreds of jobs and improving infrastructure in this area.

“If we want to see this region and these communities continuing to benefit from EU funding then we must make sure that the review of NUTS boundaries recognises the value of a merger of the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway, as well as the removal of Edinburgh and Glasgow from the current NUTS designation.

"I have written to Commissioner Hahn underlining to him the importance of this change and I hope that he, too, will see the sense in this redesignation."
