MEP to visit Scotland’s top science and renewable's developments

27 September 2005
MEP Alyn Smith will join fellow MEPs from the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee on a tour of Scotland's leading science and renewable energy sites.

The four day tour will show MEPs from across Europe the positive developments taking place in research and development in Scotland, and the enormous potential for innovative renewables technology.

The visit will include the Roslin Research Institute, the labs at Dundee University and the European Union Funded Respire project on Islay, which is working toward making the island self sufficient in renewable energy. Mr Smith and colleagues will also attend the 6th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Hub.

Speaking before the tour began Mr Smith said

"It is always a fulfilling experience to bring MEPs from other countries to Scotland to show of the high quality work that is taking place here. The Committee's visit will hopefully show Europe the potential for Scotland to lead not only in areas like life science and biotechnology but in the renewables field.

"Scotland has unique attributes that make the potential for renewables huge and the variety of renewable energy sources being used on Islay is just one indication of that.

"I've recently highlighted to our universities the potential for a European Institute of Technology to be partly established in Scotland. Hopefully this trip will show my colleagues in Europe that Scotland is an ideal location."
