SNP congratulate Shetland on Sakchai victory

07 July 2006
Scottish National Party MEP Alyn Smith today welcomed the news that Sakchai Makao had won his appeal against deportation.

Speaking in Edinburgh Mr Smith said

"This is fantastic news. It shows that Scotland, and in this case, Shetland is a welcoming community that cares about those that choose to live here, no matter where they are from.

"The Home Office got it so very wrong in this case. Davie Gardner, and all the people in Shetland who got behind Sakchai are to be congratulated for all their hard work and effort. This is great news for Sakchai and for Shetland.

"I don't believe the Home Office should be controlling who lives in Scotland, I believe that should be done by a Scottish government and this case shows why. The Home Office crack down is a response to pressures in the south of England and an attitude that is not strong in Scotland.

"Once again congratulations to Sakchai and to all who worked so hard to show how valued Sakchai is as a member of the community."

Alyn Smith had helped bring the campaign to Europe wide attention, addressing the issue in the European Parliament and has been in contact with the EU Justice Commissioner regarding the Home Office's activities in this case.
