Political/Europe correspondents another tory flip-flop tories postpone departure from EU group

13 July 2006
SNP Europe spokesman Alyn Smith MEP has today responded to reports that the Tories in the European Parliament are to leave their current group, but not until 2009 at the earliest, if at all.

Speaking from Brussels, he said:

"Yet another flip-flop from the Conservative party that changes its mind as much as its policies.

"It has been pretty clear that because of the Tories antics over the last years nobody wants to set up house with them any time soon. They have been touting their dodgy wares around the European Parliament and they've been rebuffed by everybody.

"Today's announcement that they might eventually set up with one other partner party, when the minimum requirement is four, just tries to pitch this issue into the long grass.

"If a week is a long time in politics, three years is an eternity - since Tory leaders lately don't tend to last that long so maybe Mr Cameron is charging the poisoned chalice for his successor."
