MEP Takes to the Stalls at Aberdeen Country Fair

10 July 2007
Scottish National Party MEP Alyn Smith is to spend a day working at Aberdeen Country Fair.

Mr Smith will be joining stall holders at the Fair for a days work experience on Saturday 28th July.

During the day he will carry out activities from setting up stalls, to boosting trade and promoting local produce.

Speaking before starting his two weeks of work experience Mr Smith said:

"I am really impressed by how successful farmer's markets in Scotland have become. The Aberdeen Country Fair is one of many thriving events across Scotland.

"Part of my job in Europe is to represent Scotland's farmers and food producers on the Agriculture Committee in the European Parliament. A day on the market in Aberdeen, will help me get an even better idea of how this industry works.

"Scotland and the North East in particular have some of the best produce in Europe. It's important that we promote it properly and ensure a future for our farmers and producers. I'm looking forward to selling, and hopefully tasting, the best of what the North East has to offer.

"I'm really looking forward to my day and I'd encourage as many people as possible to come along to the Country Fair on the 28th, I'll be there helping out and I'm sure all the stall holders would love to see you.

"Last year I came to Aberdeen and worked with the Postal service makingsure everyone got their mail on time. This time there hopefully won't be as many stairs to climb."

John Macfarlane, Managing Director of Apardion who will be looking after Mr Smith said:

"Events like Aberdeen Country Fair play a vital role in the community to showcase the fine quality of local produce available. On behalf of the traders Apardion is delighted to welcome Mr Smith to the market on 28th July, and his interest in the market at European level."
