Organic Logo Design Competition Launched

27 April 2009
The European Commission has today (Monday) launched an EU-wide competition to find a new EU logo for organic produce.
The competition to design the logo will be open to young art and design students from the EU aged 18 and over. The winner will win €6,000 and will see his or her design on organic
products in all 27 Member States.

Earlier this year, improved EU rules came into force covering the production of organic food.  From mid-2010, all organic food will have to carry the new EU organic logo.

Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel expressed her hope that a new logo will bring identity to the European Union’s organic sector.

Scotland’s only full member of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee, Alyn Smith MEP, welcomed the competition saying:

“Scotland's organic industry has grown by a third in the last two years and statistics show that consumption of organic produce is on the rise all over the world, though particularly in the European Union.

“Scotland’s organic produce is some of the best in the world and with such a proud reputation in this sector I want to see hundreds of competition entries from Scotland! I’d be absolutely delighted to see the winning design come from these shores to grace the packaging of organic produce from across the EU.”

The competition will be open until 25 June and the winner will be selected by an online vote.
