Scots-Led Energy Initiative Presented To European Parliament
SNP MEP and sole Scots member of the European Parliament's Energy Committee, Alyn Smith has presented a ground-breaking rewnewable energy initiative to the European Parliament.
The Scots-led project, SMALLEST, works across Europe's most remote regions to raise the scale and quality of training, mentoring and support for rural communities to convert from traditional to renewable energy generation.
Alyn said,
"I was delighted to welcome the SMALLEST team to Brussels and present their project to the Parliament. As well as Scotland, the project works across Finland, Sweden, Northern Ireland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
"The SMALLEST service helps rural communites by increasing their awareness of the potential benefits of micro-renewable energy generation as part of the Northern Periphery Programme (NPP).
"Rural communities in Scotland, and elsewhere, are often resource-rich, but fail to benefit economically. This initiative empowers local communties, and puts their destiny in their own hands.
"The conference comes on the heels of the EU 20-20-20 initiative, which aims at transforming the EU to a low carbon economy by reducing greenhouse gases 20 per cent below 1990 levels, ensuring 20 per cent of the EU energy supply comes from renewables and reducing energy use by 20 per cent."
