SNP MEP Alyn Smith has praised the European Parliament for adopting a new report on fundamental rights the same day Scotland has become the first part of the UK to publish legislation to allow same-sex marriage.
The European Parliament report assesses how fundamental rights are implemented in the EU with a comprehensive section dedicated to LGBT rights.
Alyn, who has been a vocal campaigner for equal marriage rights, said:
"It is very fitting that the European Parliament has adopted this important report on the same day Scotland is paving the way for equal marriage.
“I’m absolutely delighted that the Scottish Government has published this legislation, which is part of building a new and distinctive Scotland – one which is tolerant, open and progressive and above all values liberties of the individual.
“I’m proud of Scotland today, and of my colleagues in the European Parliament for taking this positive step towards ensuring fundamental rights for all."
Alyn Smith MEP is a Director of LGBT Youth Scotland, a charity campaigning against homophobia (http://www.lgbtyouth.org.uk/). The post is also voluntary and unpaid.
