An independent Scotland could be a strong voice of reason in the world

The whole point to independence is that we will not emulate the UK in how we work in the world. We will inherit an embarrassment of riches other countries would give their eye teeth for. English speaking, in the “middle” time zone to reach around the world, with a historical link to the Commonwealth, as well as deeper links to the European continent, Scandinavia and Russia.

We have the team, the people, the cause, but what is badly needed is better training

The SNP depute leadership contest is a great chance to be out and about, as I always am, discussing, sometimes debating, the future of Scotland’s leading party. It is a privilege to be part of, and I’m delighted with the response: the membership has embraced the process with gusto – 27 hustings in the diary! The vote will be one member, one vote, with the announcement at conference on October 13.

Scotland is a beacon to LGBTI people everywhere and we need to shout that more

I was at Glasgow Pride last Saturday, marching with a load of lovely folks from Out For Independence, the LGBTI group within the SNP, as well as a load of straight allies. It was a dreich old day, but nonetheless a life-affirming celebration with good chat, cheerfulness and nice people. Every Pride I go to I’m always struck by just how happy everybody is. Pride matters, because it is important to remember how far we have come, but also important to keep the pressure on. Scotland has come a long way, and is now ranked the best country in Europe for Equalities by ILGA-Europe, and while that is great, we’re not quite there yet.

Scotland desperately needs vigorous discussion of policy that doesn't descend into political point-scoring

There has been some discussion in the SNP depute contest about the role of policy. Nowhere near enough, and we need to think way bigger. Politics is, surely, about ideas, and we need more of them. New ideas, testing them out in a vigorous debate then implementing whatever works best, learning whatever needs to be learned in a constant cycle of improvement.
