Showcase for Scotland
As the EU's Sustainable Energy week begins, SNP MEP Alyn Smith prepares for a busy week in Brussels.
Scotland is leading the way with sustainable energy and is home to some of the most exciting emerging energy technologies. As such, it shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that Scotland plays a central role in the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW). Since 2006, the EUSEW has showcased activities dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions encouraging best practice, inspiring new ideas and building alliances to help meet the EU’s energy and climate goals.
Speaking from Brussels, Alyn said:
"Scotland is all over EU Sustainable Energy Week and rightly so. From traditional fuels to our vast renewable energy potential and future fuels still to be exploited, we really do have it all when it comes to energy.
"We have won the resources lottery twice; the first win was oil, the second is renewables. We have the expertise and knowledge which is recognised internationally as being of the highest standard. Scotland has a lot to offer Europe in terms of sustainable energy and I'm delighted to be part of that.
"I'm looking forward to speaking at a high level policy conference focusing on ocean energy which has been organised by the Scottish Government, Scotland Europa and the EU Ocean Energy Association tomorrow and welcoming Aberdeen City Council to Brussels on Wednesday for their final conference as part of the Low Carbon Regions in the North Sea (LOWCAP) project.
"The agenda for this year's Sustainable Energy Week is packed and I'm glad that I will be able to play a small part in highlighting Scotland's success in Europe."
