Turkey must release Syrian journalist Rami Jarrah

Alyn Smith MEP has sent an urgent letter to Turkey's Ambassador today, with the support of leading members of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, to request the immediate release of award-winning Syrian journalist Rami Jarrah, detained in Turkey since the 17th of February.

At the initiative of the Scottish member of the Foreign Affairs Committee Alyn Smith, 12 MEPs have expressed their deep concern following the arrest of Rami Jarrah. He is currently held in an unknown location by Turkish authorities, for no apparent reason. The Syrian reporter won the 2012 International Press Freedom Award for his work covering Syria and was invited to the European Parliament to meet Alyn and other MEPs in December 2014.

The 12 MEPs sent a cross-party letter to Turkey's Ambassador to the EU, calling for his immediate release, issuing the following joint statement:

"We are very concerned by the detention of award-winning Syrian journalist Rami Jarrah, who was arrested by Turkish authorities since Wednesday the 17th of February with no apparent reason. We have personally followed his commendable work with great interest in the European Parliament.

We have written a letter to Turkey's Ambassador to the EU, asking for Rami's immediate release, to guarantee his safety and to inform his lawyer of his whereabouts. We also call on Turkish authorities to guarantee the safety of all journalists, whose coverage of the situation in Syria has proven essential to access impartial and independent information. "
