Support equality during the Sochi Olympics, says MEP

SNP MEP Alyn Smith has signed up to the Principle 6 Campaign to highlight the Olympic principle of non-discrimination and call for an end to Russia’s anti-gay laws before the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Alyn said:

"While equal marriage is set to become a reality in Scotland in the not-so-distant future, people in Russia are being fined or even arrested just for supporting equal rights and speaking out publicly on LGBTI issues.

"Principle 6 of the Olympics Charter makes it clear that discrimination simply isn't acceptable. The campaign uses this to allow athletes and fans to speak out against the violence and discrimination stemming from Russia's abhorrent anti-gay laws both before and during the Sochi Games.

"It's astonishing that, on one hand, the International Olympic Committee has made it clear that Principle 6 includes discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation but, on the other hand, refuse to speak out against Russia's anti-gay laws.

"I'm delighted to be able to support equality through this campaign and play a small role in standing up for LGBTI people in Russia and around the world."
