Smith Nominated In MEP Of The Year Awards Again
Smith, the only Scot in the awards this year, has been nominated the previous two years, for his work in the energy field in 2008 and on regional development policy in 2007. The shortlist of three MEPs in each category will be voted on by fellow MEPs, and the winner announced in Brussels on 3 November.
Mr Mather said:
"Hats off to Alyn for another major pat on the back from his peers over in Brussels. This is a real endorsement of the blend of passion and sheer hard work he has put in over the years to fight Scotland's corner and to work with our European friends. I wish him well in the voting!"
Smith said:
"I'm delighted to have been nominated again. While the nomination is itself a real boost, fingers crossed this time it will be third time lucky and I'll actually win!"It is a privilege to represent Scotland's energy sector in Brussels, we have, truly, every possible energy resource in spades, and a massive stake in the discussions underway right now in Brussels to maximise Europe's, and Scotland's energy potential.
"Having an SNP government at my back at home has seen a massive boost in terms of access and enthusiasm, where previously the answer was all too often 'speak to London' or warm words and hot air, but the SNP government means business. Scotland's glittering energy potential has been talked about for too long, and I'm proud to be part of the team that is actually starting to deliver."
