EU Intervention in Long-Running Quarry Row
Mr Smith visited the quarry last week with Bruce Crawford MSP, Councillor Steven Paterson and members of the Save Gillies Hill Campaign group.
Mr Smith said:
"The European angle to the Save Gillies Hill Campaign is one which is yet to be fully explored though it is central to the case. It was a European Act which was passed in 1995 which altered the previous permissions and has allowed the possible continuation of quarrying activity on Gillies Hill.
"The site is one of significant historical interest, as well as home to spectacular scenery and wildlife. It is vital that we avoid any further expansion of the quarry if we are to preserve this beautiful spot.
"I hope that my letter to the Commission will provide us with guidance that can assist the Save Gillies Hill Campaign in their efforts to stall any future quarrying on the hill."
