MEP Urges Air Travellers To Swot Up On New Luggage Rules

The new rules affecting all airports in EU member states will come into effect on the 6th of November.

Speaking on the issue Mr Smith said,

"I hope these new rules will make it more straight forward for passengers travelling through airports across the EU and I welcome the advance release of these guidelines which will hopefully mean people have enough time to familiarise themselves with them.

"People need to know that although small quantities of some liquids such as toiletries will now be allowed in hand luggage they must be carried in a transparent plastic bag to allow quick and accurate screening.

"These will have to be presented to staff when going through security so a bit of advance preparation could save a lot of time and inconvenience.

Mr Smith concluded,

"I think all of us accept that there continues to be a need for tight security at our airports to reduce the threat from terrorism and people in the main have been patient. I welcome this as another step towards keeping our airports running smoothly while ensuring passenger safety."

Note to Editors

• The new rules will apply across the EU from November 6th 2006.
• Liquids will be allowed in hand luggage in containers no larger than 100 ml.
• Medicines and baby foods are exempt.
• You will still be able to purchase liquids once you are airside (through the screening process) at an airport.
• The restrictions will remain in place until further notice.
