Call For Clampdown on Mobile Charges

SNP MEP, Alyn Smith today (Thursday) welcomed the continued efforts of the EU to cut the cost of international calls from mobile phones, known as roaming charges and urged companies to act before Europe does.

The poll published by the Eurobarometer also shows 78% of 15 to 24 year olds want charges reduced for text and picture messages.

Speaking from Brussels Mr Smith said;

"The majority of people across Europe want action taken to bring down the price of using mobile phones abroad. I'm sure people in Scotland feel the same.

For example Scots on holiday in Spain are charged on average €5.92 to make and €4.48 to receive a four minute call. This is completely unacceptable.

"Mobiles have become a part of our every day professional and personal lives. It is unacceptable that we are continually being stung by mobile companies with exorbitant prices.

"What's worse is that there is no real way of knowing what you will be charged when you make the call.

"I'd rather see mobile phone operators cut their prices voluntarily so we no longer have to pay such high prices. It's obvious that people in Scotland and across Europe want to see action taken now.
