Best Wishes To Scottish Farmers For Highland Show
Mr Smith, will be at the show on Friday 22 June, and is eager to meet as many farmers and producers as possible. He will be working his way round the stalls and the competitions all day on Friday.
Speaking before the show Mr Smith said
"This has been a good year for Scotland's farmers and food producers. The reputation of Scottish food and farming is one of the best in the world and it has grown even more this year.
"The return of Scotch beef to European markets and the promotion of Scotch lamb overseas have helped considerably though there are still issues such as milk pricing and the relationship with supermarkets that need further attention.
"I'm looking forward to meeting with farmers from across the country at the show and hope to get the chance to chat with as many as possible.
"There are some big issues coming up in Europe, like reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, reforming the Common Market in Fruit and Veg and there's the problem of Brazilian beef imports. On all of these issues I want to hear the views of all Scotland's farmers and food producers.
"The show is now as important for food producers as farmers and I'm looking forward to tasting some of Scotland's fantastic produce at the Show.
"I am keen to promote Scottish produce, farmers markets and where possible the unique food produced in Scotland that could - like Scotch beef - be eligible for protected status where ever possible and I'm happy to discuss with anyone at the show how they go about getting that status and what help the EU can offer to Scotland's excellent food producers.
"Best wishes to all those heading to the show and I hope to see you there on Friday."
