MEP Gets To Grips With Slippery Customer

Mr Smith, who is on two weeks work experience across the country learnt the ins and outs of fish farming yesterday including the early starts and the importance of looking after the environment and health of the fish.

Speaking after his day Mr Smith said:

"I had a great day with Gregor and his team at Kishorn and I learnt a lot.

"The guys at the fish farm were really knowledgeable and answered all my questions, including putting to rest some fears I had about the industry.

"Such a large part of their day is spent ensuring that the farm has as little impact on the environment as possible and that the fish we eat at the end of the day are of the best quality possible.

"I was really struck by how high up their agenda animal welfare actually is.

"Before I went I said I was intrigued to find out what fish husbandry was. Now I know above all else it's hard work.

"They made sure I had a go at all the different parts of the job, taking me out on the boat, grading fish, checking them for lice, weighing the fish and even catching the salmon.

"The farmed Salmon industry has faced a few problems in recent years,particularly health and environmental scares, competition from Norwegian markets, but at this farm everything was in order and I want to thank them for a great day's work."
