MEPs oppose labelling GM pollen in honey

Alyn Smith, SNP MEP and member of the European Parliament's Agriculture and Rural Development Committee has today criticised fellow MEPs for their decision to allow GM pollen in honey without clear labelling.

Alyn said:

"This decision flies directly in the face of the ECJ ruling from 2011, and is bad news for our beekeepers. Our consumers, too, have been let down: despite our push to provide clearer labelling for all our products, and despite the clear public feelings towards GM, we have decided to allow GM pollen to go unmarked into our honey.

"It is a sad reality that despite the high level of public uncertainty towards GM and the majority of the legislation in place across the EU, we are going to see increasing levels of GM on our shelves and this is not a trend that can be reversed.

"Honey containing GM pollen should be labelled as such, both to provide certainty for consumers and our beekeepers."
