International couples, whatever their sex, will get equal treatment if they divorce or if one of them dies thanks to changes made by the European Parliament in a move welcomed by SNP MEP Alyn Smith.
"The changes in European law mark an important step towards equality across Europe.
“Married couples and registered partners should be able to enjoy the same freedoms and rights across the EU. This move will give partners the opportunity to choose which country's law applies for property sharing if they divorce or die.
"This doesn't mean that we have equal rights yet as as some member states are more co-operative than others but we're definitely moving in the right direction. The UK still, currently, exempts itself from this common decency and that's one of the issues still to be addressed - there's a long way to go."
