Smith To Speak At Pact Of Islands Conference & Signing Ceremony

11 April 2011

SNP Member of the European Parliament, Alyn Smith will tomorrow (Tuesday) speak at the 2011 Pact of Islands Conference & Signing Ceremony which will take place in Brussels as part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week.

The Pact of Islands is the political commitment of European Islands to developing Local Sustainable Energy Action Plans and identifying bankable green projects with the aim of meeting or exceeding the EU sustainability targets for the year 2020.  The project is led by the Outer Hebrides of Scotland (Comhairle nan Eilean Siar) and is co-financed by the European Commission, Directorate General for Energy.

Alyn Smith said:

"In Scotland with Shetland, Orkney, the Western Isles and Argyll and Bute we have the best wind, wave and tidal resources in the EU and a vast potential contribution to make to the EU's energy and climate change objectives. The Isle of Lewis has one of the first and largest, wave power projects of its kind anywhere in the world.

"Scotland has a significant role to play in the future of EU Energy policy and I hope this conference will play a major part in demonstrating to other island or peripheral regions the potential for sustainable energy development across the EU."

Alex MacDonald, Convenor of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar said:

“We are delighted to be taking the lead on the Isle-Pact project. This project stresses the contribution that islands can make to carbon reduction and the generation of renewable energy.
“The examples we are seeing of bankable projects coming through this project will allow islands to make a real contribution to Europe meeting its carbon targets and also benefit island communities.”
