Smith Responds To WTO Compromises

28 July 2008
Responding to reports concerning the latest set of compromise WTO proposals, Scotland's only full member of the European Parliament's powerful Agriculture Committee Alyn Smith MEP said

"This is exactly why we need a Scottish Commissioner. All Peter Mandelson is interested in is the legacy he will leave behind given that he is not seeking reappointment as Europe's Trade Commissioner after the next European elections in 2009.

"It is a sare fecht for Scotland's farmers that they have to rely on the Irish to look after Scottish farming interests in the WTO. The latest compromise text is a long way from a formal deal but the fact that a proposal of this detail has reached this far is concerning and I will certainly be watching this like a hawk on behalf of Scotland's agriculture."
