MEP Named Honorary President of Student Nationalists
Alyn Smith MEP has been elected as Honorary President of the Federation of Student Nationalists (FSN) following their Annual General Meeting last weekend.
Smith was recognised for his work with young Scots in the European Parliament, in particular his internship scheme which was set up in memory of Dr Allan Macartney MEP. This scheme allows young Scots to work in Alyn's busy Brussels office for a spell, getting to grips with the ins and outs of working in the Parliament.
Speaking after his election, Smith said:
"I am delighted to have been elected to this post, and want to thank all of those who voted for me.
"I am proud to be associated with the FSN and the work they do to involve and educate young people about politics, and I hope to remain active in helping them recruit even more young members to our cause.
Richard Laird, Convener of FSN, said:
"I am really pleased to have Alyn Smith MEP as our new Honorary President, especially so soon after his re-election to the European Parliament.
"Alyn commands respect across Scottish society for his work as an MEP and to have him associated with the FSN is a great boost for us.He has always been approachable, understanding of issues relating to students and young people and has worked hard to ensure student voices are represented at all levels.
"I look forward to working with him over the coming year to advance the causes of students in Scotland and across Europe."
