MEP To Start Work At Gas Plant

24 July 2005
Scottish National Party MEP Alyn Smith is to spend a day at Shell's St Fergus Gas plant in Buchan.

Alyn has volunteered his services to a range of industries and organisations across Scotland for two weeks of some real hard work and will join Shell to see the issues currently affecting the energy industry in the north east.

Speaking from Brussels the MEP said

"I wanted to do something with Scotland's energy industry as it is an area that has contributed so much and has so much potential. As I'm on the European Parliament Committee that looks into Energy it seemed like a good idea to get some first hand experience.

"By working in the plant I hope to meet many of the people involved in energy production and to see different sides to the business. When we talk about energy in Scotland these days it's normally about oil or renewables, but there's more to it than that.

"Work experience so far has been fun for me, but there is a serious side and hopefully this will produce some real benefits for those who have generously agreed to put up with me for a day and have the patience to teach me some tricks of their trade. I want to be able to leave with a clear picture of the industry, how they connect with Europe and how involved they are, so that I can do my best to represent their concerns when I get back to Brussels."

Mr Smith's work experience began on the 18th July and ends with the visit to the St Fergus Gas Plant.
