MEP Goes Out On The Beat

21 July 2005
Scottish National Party MEP Alyn Smith is to join Lothian and Borders Police on the beat on Friday night (22nd July).

Mr Smith, who has been taking part in a series of work experience days across the country is to join A Division for the Friday night shift in Edinburgh City Centre.

He has so far spent time with the Blood Transfusion service in Glasgow, a distillery in Speyside, behind the scenes on the set of Rebus in Govan.

Speaking from a farm in the Borders where he is currently on work experience Mr Smith said

"The work the police do in Edinburgh is fantastic, and I'm trusting them to look after me as well as the people of Edinburgh. Hopefully they don't get sick of me tagging along and put me in a cells. I'm expecting to get a completely different impression of Friday night in Edinburgh.

"Police are affected by more EU legislation than you think and there are currently plans to increase justice co-operation across European countries. Spending the night on the beat in Edinburgh will help me see how this impacts directly on the Police officers on the frontline. "
