All at sea – MEP signs on for fishing trip

20 July 2005
Scottish National Party MEP Alyn Smith is to join fishermen from Mallaig on a two day fishing trip as part of a series of work experience days across Scotland.

Mr Smith has volunteered for work experience arranged by the Mallaig and Northwest Fisherman's Association. He believes that spending time actually working in the industry will show him how European legislation and quotas on fishing and the environment actually affect day to day business. Speaking from Brussels Mr Smith said

"I'm really looking forward to this. It may turn out to be a bit foolhardy, but you don't know till you try. I certainly hope I find some sea legs. I've been an MEP for just over a year and fishing remains one of the big European issues for Scotland. I see this as a chance to really engage with some of the people who've contacted me during that year with their concerns.

This is certainly a change from Parliamentary debates and committee meetings. Hopefully this will be not just of benefit to me, but will produce some real benefits for those who have generously agreed to put up with me and have the patience to teach me some tricks of their trade."

Alyn Smith will join the fishing trip from Mallaig on Monday 25th June and return on Tuesday 26th June.

He will be available in Mallaig from the evening on Sunday 24th.
