Rolling out the barrels – MEP Alyn Smith starts work at distillery

19 July 2005
Scottish National Party MEP Alyn Smith started work this morning (Tuesday 19th July) at the Strathisla distillery in Keith. Today is the second day of Mr Smith's two week work experience tour of Scotland.

Mr Smith will spend the day working with and shadowing some of Chivas's most experienced staff in and around the distillery. He started the day at 10am at the Keith Bond blending facility, after lunch he'll work with the barrels at the Mulben Warehouse Complex and then visit the Strathisla distillery in Keith to end his day.

Speaking before setting off on his work experience Mr Smith said

"I'm really looking forward to this, in fact the distillery is probably the work experience I am looking forward to the most, though I'm sure they'll make me work before I'm allowed a wee dram."

A spokesperson for Chivas Brothers who will be looking after Mr Smith said

"We are looking forward to Alyn joining us for a day in the Scotch whisky industry. Alyn will be rolling casks and nosing Scotch whisky samples as part of our warehousing and blending operations in and around Keith that go towards the production of Chivas Regal for our many customers around the world. If he thinks he's just coming for a wee dram then he'll be sorely mistaken. This business is hard work and we'll make sure he knows that"
