Jimmy Reid joins SNP in Brussels

SNP member and veteran trade unionist Jimmy Reid is to visit Brussels next week with MEP Alyn Smith.

Mr Reid is travelling to Brussels during the UK Presidency of the EU to shadow Alyn Smith MEP to see how Scotland relates to Europe. He will also conduct interviews with a range of senior MEPs on the current state of the European Union following the rejection of the constitution and the impact of enlargement.

Jimmy Reid will meet

Francis Wurtz MEP (France)
Leader of the Group of European United Left and Nordic Green Left
Lifelong member of the Communist Party
Member of the European Parliament since 1979

Monica Frassoni MEP (Italy)
Co-President of the European Green Party (with Daniel Cohn-Bendit)
Elected in 1999 representing the Belgian Greens, elected in 2004 representing the Italian Greens

Professor Bronislaw Geremek MEP (Poland)
ALDE - Polish MEP elected on accession in 2004.
Nominated in 2004 for the position of President of the Parliament
Professor at the College of Europe in Poland, former adviser to Lech Walesa

Richard Corbett MEP (England)
UK Labour - Elected to the European Parliament in 1996 Socialist Group spokesperson on Constitutional Affairs

He will also attend a meeting of the European Parliament Regional Committee and lunch with Scottish MEPJohn Purvis (unconfirmed)
