MEP to visit Islay Renewable's project with EU colleagues

27 September 2005
MEP Alyn Smith will join fellow MEPs from the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee on a tour of Scotland's leading science and renewable energy sites, including a visit to the Limpet wave power facility on Islay (Friday 7th October).

The four day tour will show MEPs from across Europe the positive developments taking place in renewables in Scotland as well as in university research and development.

The visit to Islay is a key part of the tour and the MEPs will also attend the 6th inter-parliamentary renewable energy conference in Edinburgh the following day.

MEPs will visit Limpet, part of the EU funded RESPIRE project, and sample some of the island's whisky as well as seeing how the distilleries use their energy. Speaking before the tour began Mr Smith said

"It is always a fulfilling experience to bring MEPs from other countries to Scotland to show them the high quality work that is taking place here.

"The Committee's visit will hopefully show my European colleagues the cutting edge technology we are developing and the potential contribution Scotland can make to European research and development.

"Islay is leading the way in renewable technology and the RESPIRE programme is offering the island to demonstrate innovative ways we can produce and use clean, renewable energy.

"I think my colleagues will be thoroughly impressed by what they see here, I'm looking forward to finding out more about these projects myself. I and my colleagues will be able to take what we see on Islay to the conference in Edinburgh and promote the innovation taking place."
