EU Wide Emergency Number Could Save Lives

The single European emergency number -- 112 -- connects to the emergency services anywhere in the European Union free of charge.

More than 150 million people travel in and around the EU each year and having that number at the ready could be a life-saver.

"Whether you are a Scot enjoying the sunshine in Spain or a Spaniard embracing the traditional Scottish summer weather, accidents can happen. Calling 112 will connect you to the police, fire, ambulance and other emergency services -- not a lot of people know that!

"More and more people are holidaying in Europe or travelling between EU countries for work but public knowledge about the emergency number is still very low and that really is a worry.

"Only around one in a hundred of the UK population know that 112 is the emergency number to use in Europe and I'd hate to think that someone could find themselves abroad and needing help but not knowing how to get it.

"We have a busy summer ahead of us with so many high profile sporting events taking place such as the Olympics in London and Euro 2012 in Poland and the Ukraine as well as a host of cultural events and regular summer holidays.There will be even more people travelling abroad than usual.

"So, when you're packing for holidays, remember your bathing costume, your sunscreen and 112. Put it in your mobile, add it to your hotel details or keep it in your wallet. Although it sounds simple, this really could be a lifesaver."
