MEP encourages scots to celebrate european languages day
It's European Languages Day today and SNP MEP Alyn Smith used the opportunity to encourage people to embrace other languages.
“It's great to master your mother tongue and learn how to use it well, but it can be even more rewarding to be able to switch into another tongue as well. On the day when the census showed that Scots was healthy and spoken by half the population of Shetland and Aberdeenshire and the rest of the country coming in above a third, we are celebrating all the tongues of Europe.
"School pupils across the country are taking part in a variety of events to celebrate the European Day of Languages. From plays in foreign tongues to food from other nations, they're experiencing a flavour of our neighbours' cultures and languages.
“Having other languages opens up opportunities. From those starting their Erasmus year at University to the P1 pupils speaking another language for the first time, there's an exciting diversity of language and culture.
“Scotland is getting more diverse, our heritage is shared with our European friends and neighbours and our future intertwined. Today offers us a chance to celebrate our linguistic diversity and I hope that Scots across the country take full advantage of it.”
