SNP MEP Alyn Smith has welcomed the publication of a report by the European Commission which explores the possibility of introducing "product of island farming" as a new optional quality term.
The report will now be forwarded for discussion in Council and in the European Parliament.
"Island producers face specific problems thanks to increased transport and energy costs, reduced efficiencies of scale and poorer links to main marketplaces. All the same, our islands are also responsible for producing some of our most specialised, high quality products and any measure which helps to promote and protect these industries is very welcome by me.
"I am glad, however, that this is an optional measure which recognises that Member States are often better placed to decide what steps would be most fruitful to help support these producers.
"I look forward to seeing this report come before the Parliament and will be active in supporting it to its conclusion."
