SNP MEP and candidate in the European elections, Alyn Smith, was today (Tuesday) in the Borders, taking the SNP’s European campaign message to the people of the constituency and making the positive case for an independent Scotland in Europe.
Alyn was joined by Hawick-and-Denholm by-election candidate Harry Stoddart. The by-election also takes place on May 22nd.
“It was great to be out and about in the Borders this afternoon and I was delighted by the great reception from the people of Hawick.
“The European elections are hugely important to Scotland and specifically to rural areas. Having served on the European Parliament’s Agriculture committee, I have worked tirelessly over the last 5 years to ensure that our farmers get the best deal.
“The EU also plays a hugely positive role in creating and supporting jobs here in Scotland – something that is being put at risk by the Westminster government’s commitment to an in/out referendum on Europe.
“Electing a strong team of SNP MEPs later this month and another SNP councillor, will give the Borders and Scotland the best possible opportunities in Brussels and in Melrose.”
Commenting, Local by-election candidate Harry Stoddart said:
“I was delighted to welcome Alyn to Hawick this afternoon. Scotland needs a strong voice in Europe, but Hawick and Denholm also need a strong voice in the council.
“On May 22, a vote for the SNP in both elections is the best way to protect and support businesses and jobs.”
