SNP MEP Alyn Smith has become a member of an advisory group set up to drive the development of Europe's wave and tidal energy sector.
Alyn has been chosen to sit on RenewableUK's Legislation Advisory Group alongside a number of experts on ocean energy from all over Europe. He will address the main policy challenges and contribute towards the creation of a Market Deployment Strategy for the sector as part of the Strategic Initiative for Ocean Energy (SI Ocean).
Commenting on his selection, Alyn said:
"I'm delighted that RenewableUK has asked for my input on the legislative aspects of the developing ocean energy sector.
"This kind of forward planning is an ideal way to position ocean energy as a vital source of renewable energy for Europe. I'll be working with the rest of the members to build a strategy for the commercial development of the industry.
“I’ve been working with the European Ocean Energy Association and their Vision Paper for the sector will be a key document in the development of the Market Deployment Strategy. As a clean source of renewable energy, our oceans offer us a massive opportunity that we must grab with both hands.
“I'm delighted to be included in the advisory group; that will allow me to play a greater role in creating opportunities and it will give me the information that I'll need to take back to my political colleagues. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in.”
